Ireland Stamp 1G Explained
The 24 Month Post Study Work Route Every Indian Student Should Know
Ireland Stamp 1G is the single biggest reason Indian students are quietly moving Ireland up their shortlist in 2026. While the UK cut its Graduate Route from 24 to 18 months for taught masters and Canada tightened its post study work rules, Ireland has kept its Third Level Graduate Programme completely intact. As a result, masters and PhD graduates still get a full 24 months to look for skilled work in Ireland after finishing their programme. Indeed, the rules here have not been touched in years.
In this guide, we explain what Ireland Stamp 1G actually is, who qualifies, how long it lasts by degree level, how to apply step by step, what you can and cannot do on it, and how the transition to a longer term work permit works. Written for Indian students planning September 2026, January 2027 and September 2027 intakes.

Dublin, Ireland โ where many Stamp 1G graduates begin their careers.
What Ireland Stamp 1G actually is
Ireland Stamp 1G is the immigration stamp granted to non-EU/EEA graduates of eligible Irish higher education programmes under the Third Level Graduate Programme. Essentially, it gives you legal permission to stay in Ireland after graduation so that you can look for and take up employment relevant to your qualifications. Crucially, this permission is not tied to any specific employer, which means that you may work for anyone during the Stamp 1G period without first needing an employment permit.
Who administers it? In practice, the scheme is administered by the Department of Justice through Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), and it is then stamped on your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card once you have registered.
Ireland Stamp 1G eligibility rules
You are eligible for Ireland Stamp 1G if all of the following apply.
Firstly, you completed an eligible programme at NFQ Level 8 or above at a recognised Irish higher education institution.
The programme is on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes for a Student Immigration Permission, maintained by the Department of Further and Higher Education.
In addition, you held valid Stamp 2 immigration permission during your studies.
Furthermore, you applied within 6 months of receiving your final academic results.
Finally, you have a valid passport, valid IRP, private medical insurance, and evidence of your degree award.
How long Ireland Stamp 1G lasts by degree level

Masters and PhD graduates get the full 24 month Stamp 1G window.
Qualification Level |
Stamp 1G Duration |
Notes |
NFQ Level 8(Bachelor Honours) |
12 months |
Non-renewable. Must transition to work permit or leave. |
NFQ Level 9(Masters) |
24 months |
Granted as 12 months + 12 months renewal on the same terms. |
NFQ Level 10(PhD) |
24 months |
Same 24 month structure as masters graduates. |
Notably, the 24 month total for masters and PhD graduates is what makes Ireland Stamp 1G one of the most attractive post study work regimes in Europe for Indian students. However, the total stay under the programme is capped at 24 months, and that clock starts from the date on which you receive your final academic results.
